Mindfulness, Being Present & the In-Between
Article by Charles Waddell

Many types of physicians will tell you the intrinsic nature of our basic mind functions for navigating our survival. We “re-run” life episodes imagining how we might act or react differently, ensuring we are equipped to live our best lives. Relying on our acquired past is a part of how we prepare for what may come next. Often, we may find comfort in the past while experiencing fear in our future simply because we can control one and not the other. Google has an accurate definition of mindfulness as “a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.”

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Kim Martin
Director of Specialty Programs
Virginia REALTORS®

Best thing about job:
I really enjoy planning the details of events and choosing the F&B.  I always choose wisely for the guests, but make sure I include a few of my favorites, too!

Volunteer positions:
I volunteer as an Ambassador at James River Winery doing tastings and pouring wine for guests.  I also volunteer at Innsbrook Afterhours Concerts as a Concerteer working the beer truck.  I get to hear great music while serving guests.

Event horror story:
The venue changed the time of our dinner during the planning stages and I did not catch it.  When we showed up, they were not ready for us and said we were 30 minutes early.  I made the situation seamless and no one ever knew!

Hobbies:
Fishing, Swimming, Music, Volunteering

Husband/Wife/Kids/Pets:
Husband: Chuck Martin, Children (young adults): Robbie & Rachel.  Pets:  Penny (Miniature Dachshund) & Missy (Chubby Chihuahua).

Pet Peeve:
Decorating a Christmas tree and hanging two same color balls side by side. Miscellaneous junk on coffee and kitchen tables, also known as unnecessary clutter.
